Barnstable
Barnstable is the largest city by size and population on Cape Cod. Often regarded as one of the hubs, it is home to many destinations by Cape residents for staple services. Many businesses are located here that service the Cape in addition to being a major port for ferry service to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard along with the Hyannis Airport.
What also makes Barnstable so unique is that it is comprised of numerous different villages. Barnstable Village located along Route 6A offers many small beaches, the Olde Colonial Courthouse, Museums and libraries. Arguably one of the most historic villages it lies on the north side of town.
Centerville, located on the south side of town was once called “Chequaquet” meaning pleasant Harbor. Centerville also includes Craigville which is commonly known for Craigville Beach, a gorgeous coastline very popular for sunbathers as well as the site of many athletic events. Although primarily residential, the area also features a small business district and is home to the renown and award-winning “Four Seas Ice Cream.”
Cotuit is a small peninsula on the south side of town between Hyannis and Falmouth. Although mostly a residential area, it is the site of numerous popular beaches including Ropes Beach, Oregon Beach, Loop Beach and Riley’s Beach.
Hyannis is the largest of the seven villages of Barnstable. Because of the its size, attractions and most often one of the hottest tourist locations is it commonly regarded as “The Capital of the Cape.” Stroll down Main Street for countless, shops, restaurants and entertainment, visit numerous beaches, or kick back at the Kennedy Memorial as there are many things to enjoy.
Marstons Mills is a primarily residential area of Cape Cod. Although there are not any salt water beaches, Marstons Mills has countless ponds and lakes where finding recreation is not a problem. One of the main industries in the area was the development of a weaving mill owned by Benjamin Marston which is how the area got its name.
Originally named “Oysterville” due to being a popular spot for oysters, Osterville is a primarily residential area on the south side of Barnstable on Nantucket Sound. Often regarded for its upscale homes and charming downtown area, Osterville is a popular seasonal destinations with many oceanfront homes.
West Barnstable is located on the northwest side of Barnstable. At one time it was an area primarily set aside for agricultural initiatives, but now is mostly residential and historic. One of the more notable landmarks is it is home to Cape Cod Community College.
